The Commodore is responsible for the overall
running of the club and chairs the Executive committee. The Commodore is the figurehead on
whose behalf all letters are sent and who leads changes in the clubs direction or
initiates major projects.
The Vice Commodore assists the Commodore in
the day-to-day running of the club and takes responsibility for the running of the bar.
The Rear Commodore provides continuity through
changes of Executive members and ensures that the Executive includes members independent
of any specific responsibility. The retiring Commodore automatically becomes Rear
Commodore.
The Club Secretary takes the minutes of
meetings, sends letters on the clubs behalf and acts as a central contact for other
organisations or individuals to contact GDSC.
The Treasurer maintains the clubs accounts
and acts as a guardian to the clubs finances. The Treasurer is also responsible for
insurance and arranging for the annual account preparation. The Treasurer and the
Commodore are joint signatories to our bank accounts.
The Membership Secretary is responsible for
membership and berth fees and managing membership records. He or she produces membership
lists and proposes new members to the Executive.
The Sailing Captain is the chairman of the
Sailing Committee and is responsible for advising the Executive on issues affecting
sailing, racing, safety and special events. He or she produces the sailing programme and
duty rosters. The Sailing Captain is supported by the Fleet Captains
and usually appoints a Results Secretary to maintain the racing results and
a Local
Events Organiser to handle local events at which GDSC participates.
The Bosun organises the maintenance of the club
premises (assisted by willing volunteers), these include the clubhouse, car parking areas and boatstore. They are
responsible for clubs safety boats and engines. and facilities, including gas, water
and electricity. The bosun also holds spare keys for members.
The Galley Representative ensures galley
facilities in working order, equipment and food stocks available. They also co-ordinate
purchasing for major events.
The Newsletter Editor produces a quarterly
newsletter to keep members up-to-date with club issues and executive decisions and to
provide a platform for members to air their views.
The Publicity Manager promotes the
clubs image and advertises its activities and creates and distributes brochures and
flyers for the club and its major events.
The Social Secretary organises special events,
such as evening lectures, barbecues and the Open Day. They also assist with major club
events e.g. Dragon Pursuit, Rotunda Trophy, AGM and annual dinner-dance
