Glossop Sailing Club Junior News
April 2008
1. Friday nights begin on 9 May
and for the first 4 weeks will be open to junior members of all levels of skills.
The first Friday will be for booking in, with shore based activities for juniors, and a powerboat refresher for adults. Come along at 6.30 pm, to sign in and for parents to sign up to support Friday nights. Don’t forget that they only run because of all the volunteers: safety boat, galley, signing in and instructors.
Jane will run the galley on 9 May and will be on hand to advise parents about the new equipment etc.
The first Friday will be led by Roger, Beth and Graham with the Juniors, and Alan and Neil on the Powerboat.
Graham will focus on the race training for more experienced Juniors, initially on Friday nights, and then by arrangement, before racing on Sunday mornings.
Friday night sessions will be for members of the club only and there will be a weekly charge of £3.00 for all juniors attending, this will be used to maintain junior kit, and cover additional expenses.

2. There will be a Taster session on 31 May
– for those of you with friends who would like to try sailing. The key contact is Roger Tolman and additional support is welcome.Taster sessions will be charged at £15; then if a junior wants to join the club, they can complete a form and their payment will be treated as the Junior associate membership fee.
3. The Honda Youth Challenge will be run again this year and will be led by Alan, Neil and Phil. They will run sessions for all who are interested on Saturdays 7, 14, 21 June. This will enable selection of the 4 key Juniors who will be given more training to enter the NW Regional Final on 14 August.
4. Use of Junior Equipment
The following will apply for all club-owned junior equipment.
- The club has made a considerable investment in equipment for Junior Training sessions and consequently wants to ensure it is protected and maintained.
- The purpose of the Junior equipment is to support Junior training and formal Junior sessions i.e. Friday nights, Taster sessions or Race Training sessions.
- Experience has shown that unless the use of the equipment is supervised, it is more vulnerable to breakage. When this has happened it has not been reported and so the equipment has not then been available for the next Junior session.
- Consequently the Junior equipment is not available for hire (whether fee paying or not) or general use by club members, including free sailing and Sunday racing. It should only be used in formal sessions supervised by an instructor.
- The exception to this is use by the Junior Assistant Instructors, who have reached a level of competency, and in recognition for their contribution to junior sessions.
Windsurfing
We will be offering some monthly Windsurfing sessions for parents and juniors.
If you are interested please let us know in advance as there is limited equipment. The first 2 proposed sessions will be on Saturday 3 May and Saturday 14 June.
