2. New Members Start Here
Welcome to all new members who have joined the club for the first time this year. I hope the current mailing list is up to date and that you are all reading this!
This has been a very busy year with the foot and mouth problem and the very welcome presence of Pennine SC.
We are currently updating the club handbook and hope to have it ready in the next few weeks. In the meantime here is a very brief introduction as to what to expect.
Our club runs entirely on unpaid work by its members. To maintain safety cover and provide race officers on racing days a duty roster is prepared. Each member is rostered to around 3 duties per year.
With this newsletter you should receive a duty roster for the next 3 months. New members have been rostered for safety boat cover on days when there are already more experienced members present. Please ask if you are unsure about anything.
The duties required are:
· Officer of the Day(OD): on Sundays this requires running three races and overseeing the safe deployment of the safety boats. On Saturdays there are no races to run, but day sailing fees must be collected.
· Assistant Officer of the Day(AOD): required to help the OD start and finish races. In bad weather may help in safety boat duties.
· Safety 1 : Requires a competent helm for a safety boat. This is broadly RYA level 2 powerboat qualified. The club runs club coxswain courses as required.
· Safety 2,3: Will assist in safety boat duties. Should be able to learn some boat handling.
· Galley: Provide lunch on Sundays and tea and coffee during the day.
The duties are described the Handbook. Last years is still available in the clubhouse.
3. Forthcoming Events
Fun Saturdays 4/8, 25/8, 29/9 – Bring non-sailors for a taster. We also hope to run some races for less experienced helms.
11/12 August - Javelin Open - this was postponed due to foot and mouth. We are hoping for a good turn out – they usually drink the bar dry. If you would like to take part but do not have a Javelin, try Richard Smith 01457 765876 – he may be able to find one in the boat park. We are hoping to run Club Racing by giving the Javelins 10 minutes start.
18 August (Saturday) – Commodore’s Regatta – this is an idea from Pennine SC. I will devise an afternoon of fun events for all ages. Be prepared to get wet! Bar-B-Q after weather permitting.
19 August - Dragon Pursuit – for the more serious minded sailor a 3-hour pursuit race with a £150 first prize. Open to dinghies and sailboards.
1 September (Saturday) – Topper Open – let’s see all those toppers in the boat park on the water for this one.
8/9 September – GP14 NW Championship
We are expecting a big turn out for this one. I would like to see all the GDSC GP14s on the water for this one. If you would like any further info, Andy Monk 0161 427 2087 is the GP14 fleet captain. If you would like to use a club GP14 contact Roger Tolman 0161 427 4864. There will be no club racing. Volunteers required to help!
23 September – Sailboard Open – last year this was overshadowed by the petrol crisis. Let’s hope for a good turn out this year. Depending on conditions there may be club racing – contact me nearer the time.
30 September – Laser Open – we are hoping the combined Glossop and Pennine fleets show make a good show this year. There will be no club racing – find a laser!
6/7 October – ISO Open – I’m not sure where all the ISO sailors have been this year – let’s see you for this! There will be club racing depending on conditions.
14 October - Captains/Atkinson – 3 handicap races. Novice helms race for the Atkinson trophy – more experienced for the Captains cup.
28 October – Reporter Trophy – clash of the fleets. 3 Handicap races. First three boats in each fleet count towards a fleet score.
4. Sailing Matters
Virgin Racers To encourage novice helms to start sailing on Sundays I want to start a novice fleet scheme in September. There would be a separate start for the novice fleet in the 13.45 race avoiding more “experienced” helms on the start line. There will be a novice helm prize!
ODs Please make sure that if any of your duty team are new to the club they are shown what to do. It is important that any safety boat deployed has a crew of two. If in doubt of the abilities of the safety boats to cope with the conditions abandon the race.
5. Help Needed
Newsletter Editor As you can see from this poor effort my skills are lacking in this area. Can you help?
Sailing Secretary I need someone to help deal with the duty roster and act as assistant to the membership secretary.
