1. Rates & Rent Review

Great news at last, after many years of negotiation, the club has  received 50% rebate from both the High Peak (Rates) and North West Water (Rent). The money represents the equivalent of 30 new members, and will be used to improve the club’s infrastructure. Many thanks must go to executive members past and present particularly Dave Robertson and  Jim Dormand for their resilience to achieve this rebate when the Authorities were not always forthcoming.

It is our intention to convince the Authorities that the rebate should continue for at least five years so the saving can be planned into the Clubs budget.

2. Dinner Dance

Many thanks must go to the organisers of the Dinner Dance, which was another resounding success. Adrian Sandilands seemed to be particularly pleased with his trophy haul and steps are being taken to assist him in getting his haul home next year (anyone with a large van please contact the Editor).

The new Commodore Tim Snellgrove presented Steve Tinsley with a memento from the members in thanks for all his efforts as Commodore over the years. Steve is now Rear Commodore.

3. Junior Club

After the most successfully run Junior Nights, John Mather has agreed to run them again this year. John brought great fun to the evenings, which on some nights had eighteen juniors attending. We hope to build on last year’s success, but would welcome help from any members willing to forfeit a couple of hours to assist. Assistance could be given just launching, taking names, making cups of tea etc, If you’re interested call John, Tim Snellgrove or Dave Burke.

Fancy being Junior Fleet Captain? As Fleet Captain you would have to be under the age of 18, have an input into how the junior club is run, organise your troops, keep them informed in what the club can offer them, even write your own editorial in the newsletter. Interested? Call John, Tim Snellgrove or Dave Burke.

4. From the Engine Room

The executive committee has been busy through the winter months planning for the coming year and here are some of the activities or forth coming events:

a)  Development Plan: The Development Plan, which is to be unveiled early in 2001, has been under the pen for some months.

Put simply, for any Sports Club to gain lottery funding (or any other type of external help) it has to be endorsed by its ruling body.  For RYA endorsement, a club has to gain RYA ‘Champion Club’ status (recognised Junior/Youth training).

There are some basic requirements to achieve this status (one of which is to have a Development Plan) which the Executive Committee have been actively working on and are included within the Development Plan.

The Development Plan is not only a requirement of the RYA but essential for the clubs future direction and planning.

The Plan will be circulated for membership review in February, and there will be an Extraordinary General Meeting called in March 2001 for members to discuss and approve the Plan.

The plan includes the ideas, large and small that we have in  store for the club.

b)  Major Events

So that this Years Major Events are a success it has been decided that each event should have an Event organiser. The organiser will plan each Event, using the Catering and Social Committee members’ experience so that the workload can be spread evenly.

Any fleet Open will still be organised by one of the class members.

c)  Junior Trainers

To formalise Junior coaching we are looking for any members who would like to become a Junior Trainer. There is a simple RYA course to be taken. We are particularly interested in hearing from any female volunteers, please note the  course is not intensive.  Contact either Tim Snellgrove or Roger Tolman.

d)  Glossop Sailing Regatta - August 17/18/19 (Event Organisers Tim Snellgrove and Dave Burke)

The aim is that Friday will be a Club Day with sailing events for Racers and non-Racers alike in the afternoon and evening, followed by a BBQ. Saturday and Sunday will be given over to as many Open events as possible for members and non-members, fleet racing to be run in parallel with the aid of a panel of Duty Officers!

e)  Sailing Captain

The search for a Sailing Captain goes on.

Their responsibilities are as follows:

1 – Provide leadership to the Club on all matters relating to sailing (not just racing) – through the Sailing Committee.

2 – Hold regular Sailing Committee meetings (Fleet Captains + interested members).

3 – Act as focal point for other Clubs wishing to use GDSC sailing facilities (e.g. Open Meetings).

If you’re interested you would be most welcome.

g) Executive Members

To expand the committee (and lighten the load) we are actively seeking new committee members, especially from new members, juniors or people who haven’t ‘served ’ before. New ideas and a fresh approach is what we are seeking, Sailing experience is not a criteria. Again anyone interested please contact one of the committee.

Some of the openings are as follow:

Newsletter Editor                  Publicity & Marketing

Sailing Captain                      Fleet Captains

Events Organisers/helpers

Assistant to Newsletter Editor (e.g. keep Web pages updated)

Assistants to Treasurer and Secretary (learn what the Exec. does)

Please note if you cannot devote much time but would still like your opinion aired, any member is welcome to attend the Executive Committee meetings, which are held at the Sailing Club every 3rd Thursday of the month at 8pm.

f) Full Time OD?

Yes you read it correctly, we may have secured the services of someone who has agreed to perform the task of OD on most Sundays. The advantages are obvious so please treat this kind soul with tenderness and respect.
5. Coming Events

a) Working Parties (Weekends from January27th through to March 25th) - Don’t be shy, we all have some jobs at home to do during the winter months, but sparing a couple of hours to help at the club would be most useful.

b) Duty Roster - Take advantage that the Roster is now up in the club house for those members who prefer to choose, rather than have someone else choose the dates for you. Please note that each member should volunteer for at least 3 duties throughout the year.

c) Golden Boot - Please keep your eyes open from the start of the season for good candidates for the Golden Boot Award, the more bizarre the better.
