2000

As we .go to press, a dozen new members have signed on the line to sail at Torside. The new people and boats to look out for are :

Boyd Black (GP14), Rob Butler (Laser 161653), Will Cummings (crewing RS800 851 with Matt Barnes), Ed Dyson (Laser and crewing Javelin 529 with Richard Smith), Paul Henri (Laser II), Owen Lightowler (Scorpion 1424), Chris Rodgers (ISO 660 and Scorpion 975), Stephen Orenczuk (ISO 660 and Scorpion 975), Paul Nix (Laser 128794), David Lynch (Jolly Boat—well worth a close look at the speed demon of the 30’s), ??? (470 – an Olympic Class !), Geoff Rubner (Laser), Tim Holden (International 14).

Please make every effort to welcome these new members and ensure that they don’t feel ‘all-at-sea’. They can probably be noticed first when they ask “does anyone know the combination for the changing room, please ?”

(If I’ve missed anyone from the list, let me know and I’ll mention you in the next issue—Ed.)

This year's Open Day is on June 17.

It’s the chance to bring friends and family, relatives and neighbours to enjoy a day out on the water. Don’t forget the weather’s often better at Torside than it is where you live !

The Comet Nationals were held at Glossop this year and the event was a great success. The visitors all complimented the club on its friendliness and organisation and the racing was exciting all weekend despite there being no protests (Javelins please take note !).

The event provided a welcome boost to our funds of £250 plus bar profits (thanks to sound financial management by Stuart Gilder) and half a page coverage in Yachts & Yachting as well as experience in planning large events, in time for the forthcoming Javelin Nationals.

The weekend was organised by Stuart and Hilary Gilder; Race Officer John Mather was grateful for the tolerance and assistance of : Graham Shaw, John Heyes, Roger Partington, Steven Tinsley, Dave Staley, Andy Proctor, Roger Monck, Simon Fawkes, Matthew Barnes and Will Cummings.

A GP14 Open has been confirmed for Sunday, September 3. Not only is this the chance all our ‘Geeps’ have been waiting for but it could lead to larger events in years to come (did someone say Northern Area Championships ?).

Contact Andrew or Caroline Monk for further details and get practising out there now !

A decision on whether to close the water to club sailors will be taken by the committee when numbers can be estimated but be prepared at the least for an alteration to club sailing times.

Picnic tables destroyed
Vandals have destroyed our picnic tables - suggestions on their replacement welcome

Swimmers’ club expands

Richard Smith and Tim Holden have bought an International 14 to show the RS800s how it’s done.

Laser 2000 sighted
Look out for the Dermott & Jane in their new asymmetric - a Laser2000, combining fun and traditional hull.

Shock later news
Handbooks really ready!

The new system of choosing your own duties is in full swing, so don’t forget that you need to volunteer for three duties in the sailing season (ends October 31).

If you don’t volunteer, you will be ‘volunteered’ by the Sailing Captain, so write your name down on the roster, pinned on the Junior Noticeboard in the clubhouse, or ring the Sailing Captain.

Look out for Race Officer and Safety Boat training events in June and July !
