The 1999 Fennel Trophy allowed the dozen plus junior sailors to put into practice the lessons of the previous Friday evenings in a fun-filled event. To ensure maximum participation, some boats were crewed by two and some were sailed single-handed. Everyone raced at least three times thanks to the safety boats ferrying crews to and fro.

Cleverly setting an all-offwind course, Kirsty Higgins ensured that the frustrations of sailing to windward in an Optimist were not allowed to detract from the excitement of the racing. This year, of course, we have two club Toppers for the larger Juniors to use and we are looking at how we can offer the RYA badge scheme to those attending the instruction sessions.

Instruction sessions

This year, Friday night sailing will start in May (earlier if you can brave the cold) with formal instruction starting in June, again with alternate Friday nights. To kick-off the instruction, we will run a Saturday get-together on June 3rd—put this in your diaries now !

We need to refurbish the Optimists for the Juniors and John Mather would welcome any volunteer parents who will sand, drill, saw or fibreglass (no experience required). Please contact him to offer your assistance.

The committee welcomes your views, in fact we have a special agenda item each month for members’ views. Please do remember though that we all put a lot of effort into this club and need volunteers to help. Like anyone, we’re keener to discuss solutions than problems, so before asking why something doesn’t work, please consider how YOU could make it work.  A full description of the roles of the committee can be found in the club handbook and on the main website at www.gdsc.org/committee.htm
